The African Union Sports Council, Region 2, is to embark on the revival of African traditional sports and games with a championship for Nigerian schools. Working in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Education, and the National Sports Commission NSC, the championship will focus on sports of African/Nigerian origin.
According to the AUSC, African traditional sports and games deserve a place at the Olympic Games, it therefore, becomes imperative to introduce them to our children while they are still young. We must not allow these games to die. In future when they gain Olympic status, we will have comparative advantage over other continents and win more Olympic medals.
In this wise, sports like Ayo, Dambe, traditional
wrestling, and Baram, alongside others, have been penciled down for the championship. Eventual champions from the Nigerian leg, will qualify for the upcoming Region 2 games in the Gambia, and the African championship in Egypt next year. Other incentives include; training and certification for schools PE teachers, certificates and trophies for participating schools amongst others.
Interested schools could register via; https://bit.ly/2026TSGregisterationform with registration continuing throughout the month of May 2026. The final of the championship is scheduled for the MKO Abiola National Stadium Abuja in August this year.
