It was another record breaking sprint for Divine Iheme, at the European U-18 athletics championship in Rieti, Italy, over the weekend.
16 year old Iheme, who holds the U-15 world record in 100m, powered to 10.29s in the 100m final to dust the competition, and win European gold, to the delight of his parents, who were in the stands.
Iheme, who represented Great Britain, at the meet, has Nigerian roots, as both his parents represented Nigeria in athletics in the early 2000s, and still keep up with their families back home.
Divine’s father, Innocent Iheme, is a member of CLIMM Foundation, a body currently supporting the development of athletics in South Eastern Nigeria. He contested to represent the Southeast on the AFN board, in the last AFN elections, but was rigged out, which still makes him unhappy. That situation could however, be remedied, if the proper steps are taken by the NSC, and the AFN.
Divine Iheme, remains an exciting and very good prospect. His victory at the European championship, is testament to his talent and the efforts of his mother, who currently acts as his mentor and coach. He would no doubt be a great boost to Nigeria, if the right approaches are made to his minders. We congratulate him for his victory.
