The search for his 100th title on the ATP tour continues for former world number one tennis player Novak Djokovic, after he was humbled by upcoming tennis prodigy Jacub Mensik of Czech Republic on Sunday in the Miami Open final 7/6 (4) 7/6 (4). Having not reached a final this year, it was believed that Djokovic would easily sweep aside his younger opponent, but Mensik 19, who has a booming first serve was able to outwit his more accomplished rival to lift his first ATP 1000 title.
It was a tough experience for Djokovic, whose partnership with Andy Murray, his former rival, since this year’s Australian Open, is yet to yield a title. Having notched 99 titles on the ATP tour, Djokovic who was hoping to lift his centenary title in Miami gave it his all, but Mensik proved his mettle as one of the stars of the future on the ATP circuit, when he held his nerve to close out the biggest win of his career.
Djokovic will take consolation from the fact that he has at least made it to a final this year and will be looking forward to going one better in his next tournament on tour; the Monte Carlo Masters. The clay court tournament serves off on April 6th.
