The 2026 Asian Games officially begins tomorrow in the Nagoya and Aichi Prefecture of Japan. The Games which run from 19th September to 4th October, will host 43 sports and 496 medal events.
It is the single largest congregation of athletes in recent times, with an estimated 17,000 athletes set to compete and represent their nations. For perspective, the Olympic Games are currently downsizing. Rio 2016 Olympics had the highest number of athletes, with 11,238. The African Games accommodates only about 5,000 athletes, which makes the 2026 Asian Games a mind blowing spectacle.
Due to accommodation challenges, and for sustainability, organizers have contracted an Italian cruise ship, the Costa Serena, to dock at the port of Nagoya, and provide extra accommodation for athletes, as organizers believe it would be more cost effective and sustainable than building new accommodations.
While the official opening of the Games is on 19th September, events have commenced since the 10th. On Friday 18th however, the North Korean anthem was mistakenly played for the South Korean field hockey team, and we expect President Kim Jung Un of the North, to have something to say about that.
Meanwhile, outside of those minor errors, athletes are expected to have a wonderful time, representing their nations with honor. At the time of this report, no medals have officially been awarded, but India the defending Games champions have vowed to retain their title, and return to Delhi with the ultimate prize.
