Carlos Alcaraz defeated World number one tennis player Jannik Sinner in an epic final yesterday to successfully defend his French Open title. Down and out in the third set, while trailing by two sets to love and facing three match points in the third set, Alcaraz launched a comeback for the ages by saving the match points and going on to beat Sinner in five grueling sets.
In a battle of the young blood, that lasted nearly five and half hours, following the gradual closing of the big three era, Alcaraz and Sinner showed that without Djokovic, Federer and Nadal tennis was still in good hands.
Sinner, who recently served a three month ban for a doping violation, will rue his missed chances to convert match points while leading by two sets to love, before falling 6/4, 7/6 (4), 4/6, 6/7 (3), 6/7 (2), to the hard hitting Alcaraz for his fifth major title. It will indeed be a hard loss to swallow for Sinner, who lost the chance to win his third major title, having triumphed at the US Open last year and the Australian Open earlier this year.
