MRS. TINUBU CHEERS CUSTOMS VOLLEYBALL TEAM TO VICTORY

It was a successful day of competition at the 39th edition of the African women basketball club championship, which officially got underway at the package B of the MKO Abiola National Stadium Abuja, yesterday.

In a match that preceded the opening ceremony, APR of Rwanda were too good for CFC of Tunisia in a come from behind victory.

After falling to the Tunisians 18-25 in the first set, the Rwandese bounced back to edge a close second set, 26-24 to even the scores. The next two sets were close affairs, but APR prevailed due to their more athletic approach by closing out both sets 25-23, 25-23, to win 3-1.

In the 2nd game of the night, Nigeria Customs were just too good for their Cameroonian counterparts, MKE, smashing them right off the tip in a 3-0 whitewash 25-18, 25-17, 25-22, under the watchful eyes of the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu and the Comptroller General of Nigeria Customs Service, Adewale Adeniyi.

Earlier, Mrs. Tinubu, when declaring the event opened, had charged African women to rise up to be counted. She pointed out that doing exploits in life was usually based on self-determination, and so, the players should rightly see the opportunity of the championship as an avenue to excel.

Thirteen African countries are represented by over twenty volleyball clubs in the 14-day championship, which ends on the 14th of April.
